I still have an old iPhone 3G that I use with my iHome iA91 App-enhanced Home System alarm clock. Last Saturday when I went to change the time due to daylight savings time was ending, I found out that my battery had exploded. See the pictures below:
Notice on the front view that the screen has separated from the case and the screen lighting is showing through. It may be a bit hard to notice but on the back view the case is cracked in several spots and is bulging out. Guess that I shouldn’t be too surprised as it is over 6 years old.
I still need this phone for my iHome iA91 alarm clock so I ordered a replacement battery on eBay for less than $6 including free shipping. I will edit this post later to let you know how the repair turns out.
11/13/2014 Well, I got in my new battery for my iPhone 3G yesterday and after viewing a couple of videos last night on how to replace the battery, I did just that. And it actually still works. My first iPhone repair!
